Along the way you will find places of unparalleled beauty such as the Natural Park of Ria Formosa, the Marina of Vilamoura, the Falésia (Cliff) of Vilamoura and Açoteias (cliff beaches), Salgados Lagoon, Alvor Ria, Lagos, Sagres. Then ride to north through wild beaches, rough cliffs towards the Alentejo coast with its breathtaking and wild west coast with all its scents, colors, imponent rock formations and endless beaches.

Explore authentic villages from the Algarve and Alentejo, vibrant towns, and panoramic viewpoints along the way. On the way, you will get to know the wild Atlantic Ocean in all its glory, which sometimes meets jagged cliffs, sometimes natural sandy beaches. Likewise, you will cycle through pine groves and orange orchards as well as rice paddies on your  bike tour along the Atlantic coast in Portugal. You will pass through national parks, which offer a protected life to rare bird species, and enjoy the sound of the ocean and the salty air again and again.

Program

Upon arrival in Faro, a member of the Bikesul staff will greet and welcome you, providing you with detailed information about the region and the Tour. Then, the transfer will take you directly to the hotel, in the city of Faro, just 10 minutes from the airport.

After check-in, take the opportunity to explore the capital of the Algarve.

Accommodation in Faro.

67km / 480m of climbing

Leaving the city of Faro, the start is easy and quite pleasant through the Ria Formosa natural park reserve, passing by the island of Faro and then through Ludo, Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo, exquisite tourist areas and very well cared for. You will also pass by the famous promenade of Quarteira and then by the luxury Marina of Vilamoura.

The extensive sandy beaches give way to steep cliffs and the landscape changes drastically, also becoming more rugged terrain.

From Olhos de Água place to Albufeira city the way is a bit urban as Albufeira is the most touristic city of the Algarve.
For sure the downtown of Albufeira and the Praia dos Pescadores area is the most interesting to visit. The area is a bit hilly here with short but steep hills to overpass.
Riding through the marina of Albufeira you will then pass by the beaches of Arrifes, Galé and Salgados. In Salgados the natural park with its salty lake offers a great opportunity for the birdwatchers.
A long woodpath along the dune and the coast takes you to your destination of the day, the town of Armação de Pêra.
Accommodation in Armação de Pêra.

Breakfast

61Km / 500m of climbing

This day starts with a visit to another of the most famous places in the region, the chapel of Senhora da Rocha, located on a cliff into the sea. Perfect place for a trip photo!
Riding inland you will pass by the city of Lagoa, a land of wine. Then a fast section takes you to Ferragudo, a beautiful fishing village on a small hill located on the bank of Rio Arade with Portimão just on the other side. The central square (praça central) is perfect to have a drink or a meal, and just a 5 min walk up through the narrow streets of the village takes you to the church on the top of the hill. The views over the river and Portimão city are superb.
Continuing your journey you will pass the old bridge that takes you to Portimão, the 2nd largest city in the Algarve. Following the cycling lane along the Arade river you will get to Praia da Rocha, a very famous summer destination.
Riding along the coast you will get to the Alvor Bay. Here you can opt to cycle around the Bay to Meia Praia or take a boat to Lagos.
Accommodation in Lagos.

Breakfast

60Km / 820m of climbing

You cannot leave Lagos without visiting Ponta da Piedade, one of the most beautiful places in the Algarve, this is where this day begins!

Continuing your journey you will then find small tourist villages next to the beach of enormous beauty, such as Praia da Luz, Burgau and Salema.

At this moment, you will be cycling on the Costa Vicentina, a much less populated, wilder and usually windy area of the Algarve. Passing through Vila do Bispo, you will then descend to your destination of the day, Sagres.

In Sagres, be sure to visit the fortress of Sagres and the fishing harbor.

Accommodation in Sagres.

Breakfast

68km / 750m of climbing

From Sagres to the extreme southwest of Europe, Cabo de São Vicente, it is just 6km. We recommend visiting the lighthouse and the fort before continuing your journey north.

You will pass close to Vila do Bispo again, continuing through an almost wild area that leads to Carrapateira, a place of unparalleled beauty, with several viewpoints from which you can appreciate the grandeur of the Costa Vicentina. You will pass by Praia da Bordeira which has a very spacious sand that at low tide increases considerably in size, becoming one of the largest in the Algarve. Here flows a stream that sometimes forms a lagoon.

A short but challenging climb takes you to a plateau. Then cycle through eucalyptus forests and barren pastureland on Euro Cycle Route 1 that will take you to Aljezur.

Breakfast

 70km / 700m of climbing

Leaving Aljezur follow parallel a stream towards the coast and Praia da Amoreira. Continuing by land, there is a gradual ascent that leads to the plateau that connects to the town of Rogil, famous for the cultivation of sweet potatoes. Looking back the small town shines of Aljezur with its whitewashed houses, which are lined up between a river up the slope to a former castle.

Continuing on mostly flat terrain through agricultural fields, you will pass through the town of Maria Vinagre, then head to another of the most famous beaches in the Algarve, Praia de Odeceixe. The long sandy beach and the Seixe river invite you to take a dip in calmer waters.

Crossing the Odeceixe bridge, you enter Alentejo lands. You will visit the famous fishing village of Azenha do Mar, followed by Praia do Carvalhal, before arriving at the famous fishing and tourist village of Zambujeira do Mar.

Following along the coast, after passing through Porto das Barcas, access to the Cabo Sardão Lighthouse via the magnificent fishermen's trail of the Rota Vicentina. At the rugged cliffs you not only have the opportunity to watch the roaring surf and enjoy the salty sea air, you can also observe storks that have set up their nests in the rocks – unique in the world.

Before reaching Vila Nova de Milfontes, you will pass through the towns of Arrifana and Longueira.

Accommodation in Vila Nova de Milfontes.

Breakfast

55km /

Directly at the mouth of the Rio Mira into the Atlantic Ocean is the Forte de São Clemente. The old fortress served as early as the 16th century from attacks by pirates. Leaving Vila Nova de Milfontes on this day you will start by pedaling along the dunes and beaches north of Vila Nova de Milfontes, such as Praia do Malhão, Praia dos Aivados and Praia do Queimado, until you reach Praia da Ilha do Pessegueiro. The trail that connects this point to the village of Porto Covo is fascinating and inspiring, as evidenced by the music of Rui Veloso, for example.

After exploring the village, continue along the coast, passing by the port of Sines and this important town. Very close to the center, the fortress, built in the first half of the 15th century, is on a cliff – an area occupied by different peoples since the Paleolithic – as it had military defense intentions. It has a beautiful view of the bay. Vasco da Gama's father, Estêvão da Gama, was mayor in Sines and, for that reason, it is deduced that the navigator was born in this place.

The connection to this day's destination, Vila Nova de Santo André, is made by a trail through a pine forest that can sometimes become more demanding due to the somewhat sandy terrain.

Accommodation in Vila Nova de Santo André.

Breakfast

70km / 500m of climbing

After crossing Vila Nova de Santo André, you will continue along the Lagoa de Santo André to the beach. It will then pass by Praia de Melides to turn inland towards the village of Melides. Follow the long straights of the EN261 that lead to Pinheiro da Cruz and then to Carvalhal. Continuing on to Lagoa Travessa, you will enter the extensive rice fields that will lead you to Comporta, where you can visit the Rice Museum. Rice cultivation came with the rule of the Moors in the 8th century. Once in the Tróia Peninsula, you'll travel through this magnificent touristic area to Costa da Galé where you'll take the ferry that connects to Setúbal. If you wish, we suggest visiting the Roman ruins of Troia and the beaches on the Peninsula with stunning views of Arrábida and the coast of Setúbal.

Accommodation in Setúbal.

Breakfast

Rest Day or Loop ride in Arrábida

A day very different from the previous ones. In this day you can opt to relax in Setúbal or go out for a last short ride in Setúbal and Arrábida national park. Is so, start by cycling along the coast towards the famous beaches of Comenda and Figueirinha and then return to Setúbal though the countryside.

After the ride in the afternoon a transfer will take you to Lisbon.

Explore the Lisbon's sights right after checking in at your hotel. The best place to start is the Baixa district, in the heart of Lisbon, with its tile façadea and narrow streets. Equally worth seeing is the Torre de Belém, right on the Tagus River. Not far from the tower, the bridge Ponte 25 de Abril spans the river. Nearly 2300 meters long, it is one of the longest suspension bridges in the world. In the evening, enjoy dishes of Portuguese cuisine and treat yourself to a glass of port wine.
