Start in Tavira and pedal through ancient castles, narrow singletracks, coastal cliffs, and timeless fishing villages as you ride toward the dramatic cliffs of Ponta da Piedade in Lagos. Experience wide-open golden beaches, hidden MTB trails, and the wild beauty of the Ria Formosa Natural Park. Explore the Moorish charm of Silves city and savour some of the freshest fish and seafood in Portugal.

Program

In 6 days of Mountain Biking in the Trans Algarve MTB Tour you will start by exploring the trails around the romantic city of Tavira, host of the famous MTB Stage Race - Algarve Bike Challenge. After 2 diverse stages is time to ride through the Barrocal and visit the city of Loulé.

Located in the countryside but not too far from coastline and from the hilly are of Serra do Caldeirão, this small city as the centenary Market as it's hotpoint and as plenty of nature points of interest around. From there continue along the Barrocal area towards the most traditional village of the Algarve, Alte. On the way you will ride the Algibe stream singletrack, a local famous trail!

Then is time to visit the former moorish capital of the Algarve, Silves, a thriving cultural, political, and economic center during the Islamic period, its rich heritage is still visible everywhere you look.

At the heart of the city stands Silves Castle, the best-preserved Moorish fortress in Portugal. Its red sandstone walls dominate the skyline, and cycling along its ramparts gives you sweeping views over the town and the surrounding countryside filled with orange groves, vineyards, and rolling hills.

After a loop day exploring the famous Lagoa cliffside trails—an unmissable fantasy landscape of caves, grottoes, and sea arches, where golden cliffs rise above shimmering turquoise waters—it’s time to head west and conclude this memorable MTB adventure in the historic coastal city of Lagos.

Upon arrival in Faro, a Bikesul staff member will greet you and transfer you to your hotel in Tavira, providing details about the region, the tour, and assisting with your bike fitting.

Shaped by Roman traders, Moorish rulers, and generations of tuna fishermen, Tavira has evolved into one of the Algarve’s most enchanting towns. Its cobblestone streets and traditional whitewashed houses are framed by golden beaches and the pristine landscapes of the Ria Formosa Natural Park. Slow down and embrace Tavira’s relaxed rhythm as you explore its highlights—wander through the ruins of the hilltop castle, cross the ancient Roman bridge over the Gilão River, and if you wish admire the remarkable collection of 22 Gothic and Renaissance churches scattered throughout the town. Tavira is the perfect starting point for our spectacular MTB adventure, where rich heritage and natural beauty set the tone for an unforgettable journey.

50 km of distance / 850m of climbing

Explore the northeast area of Tavira council with it's quiet and welcoming countryside landscape. With a rolling hills terrain you will explore traditional small villages, cross streams and ride through trails that only some locals know.

You will pass by the natural park of Conceição (Mata Nacional) and then head south to the coastline arriving at the most stunning viewpoint over Ria Formosa in Cacela Velha, a place where time seems to slow to the rhythm of the tides. Perched on a small hill overlooking the Ria Formosa lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean, this tiny whitewashed hamlet offers breathtaking views across sandbanks, salt marshes, and endless golden beaches.

At its heart lies a charming square framed by a historic church and the remains of an old fortress, a reminder of Cacela Velha’s strategic importance through Roman and Moorish times. Narrow lanes, simple houses, and the absence of crowds give the village a peaceful, authentic atmosphere that feels worlds away from modern resort life.

Below the village, the lagoon opens onto some of the most pristine beaches in the Algarve, accessible by foot or small boat at low tide. Here, calm waters, shifting sands, and abundant birdlife create a natural paradise.

From the ride west towards Tavira. The terrain is much flatter and you will pass by Cabanas de Tavira where you can relax at one of the several café terraces or taste the typical cuisine and especially locally caught seafood and fish.

In the very last section to Tavira you will pass by the salt plans where you can admire this art and enjoy the stunning landscape around you.

Say goodbye to Tavira and ride west following the magnificent paths and trails used in the famous mtb stage race Algarve Bike Challenge.

A mixed of different terrain along the way takes you to explore the barrocal region (area between the coastline and the "Serra" inland hilly area). A mountain bike ride through the wild countryside of the Algarve, where every trail brings you closer to nature at its purest. Along the way, visit traditional villages as Santa Catarina da Fonte do Bispo where you can visit brick factories and olive oil press or São Brás de Alportel, the village of the cork.

Finish at Loulé city, one of the Algarve’s most charming and culturally rich destinations, offering a perfect blend of history, tradition, and modern leisure. Located just inland from Faro, it is known for its historic old town, where winding cobblestone streets lead you past whitewashed buildings adorned with colorful tiles and wrought-iron balconies.

The Loulé Market (Mercado Municipal) is a must-visit: a lively, colorful space where locals sell fresh seafood, fruits, vegetables, and traditional Algarvean delicacies. It’s a feast for the senses and a great way to experience local life.

In this days you will ride the Geoparque Algarvensis, a project to create a UNESCO Global Geopark covering parts of the Loulé, Silves, and Albufeira municipalities. It highlights the region’s incredible geological heritage spanning hundreds of millions of years, a exhilarating ride through the scenic interior of Algarve.

On the way you will pass by several interesting and beautiful spots as Fonte Benémola, an area of great beauty with a spring of water next to a small stream, the Algibre stream and it's long fantastic singletrack and the typical village of Querença, Salir and Alte, this last one considered by many as the most typical in the Algarve. Surrounded by the hills of Caldeirão, it is famous for its whitewashed houses with simple roofs, freshwater springs, and delicious pastry with figs and carob.

After the major village of São Bartolomeu de Messines you will ride along the Arade lake before you arrive at the historic city of Silves, the first capital of the Algarve, back in the moorish times.

 50 km of distance / 700 m of climbing

This circular route in central Algarve is perfect to explore the diverse landscape of the barrocal and the wonderful coast of the Algarve.

From the beautiful city of Silves follow the Arade river towards south passing vineyards, orange tree fields and farmlands until you reach the typical village of Estombar.

Then the landscape and terrain changes dramatically as you approach the coast. Reaching the famous Benagil beach you will then follow through the seven hanged valleys trail towards Senhora da Rocha. This ca. 10km coastal cliff ride section stretch is a bit technical although the lovely scenic views worths it!

Ride then inland towards Silves through a mix of trails landscape where you can enjoy the typical rural scenery.

70 km of Distance / 1100 m of climbing

Start your last riding day of this trip with a car transfer to Monchique (30 min). Monchique is a charming mountain village nestled in the heart of the Serra de Monchique, offering a refreshing contrast to the Algarve’s coastal scenery. Surrounded by lush forests of cork oak, eucalyptus, and chestnut trees, it sits high in the hills, where cooler air and panoramic views create a peaceful, almost timeless atmosphere.

The village is known for its narrow, winding streets, traditional whitewashed houses, and small local shops selling regional products such as medronho liqueur, honey, and cured meats. Life in Monchique moves at a slower pace, shaped by nature, tradition, and strong community ties.

First part of will be easy and mostly downhill towards Bensafrim. Already in Lagos council you will pass by the traditional village of Barão de São João. Then follow the route of the mtb cycling center of Lagos passing Almádena village and then meeting the coastline at the marvelous village of Burgau. Then follow amazing trails along the coastline overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, which will take you through some of the best-hidden secrets of this area. Ride toward Ponta da Piedade, a truly unmissable dreamscape of caves, grottoes, and soaring sea arches. Here, towering golden cliffs rise boldly above the Atlantic, while crystal-clear turquoise waters surge below—an awe-inspiring meeting of land and ocean that defines the Algarve at its most spectacular.

Please note: Our bike tour is a “living thing”, being influenced by multiple factors such as weather conditions, group riding abilities and trail damage, to name a few. Your local guides are experts in guiding cyclists  and will be continually assessing these factors making tweaks to the itinerary where necessary to ensure that every member of the group has the best experience possible.
